Be Ad SMART

Don’t Exhaust Your Body, It’s a Dangerous Road...

This ad was made by a SMART teen. What’s the message? Who is it for? Does it catch your attention?

Can you think of an advertisement that you have seen recently in a magazine or on TV? Maybe a company is selling tennis shoes.

Are you for sale?

No matter what the ad says about the shoes, one thing is for sure. That shoe company will do everything to get kids to buy their product. The tobacco industry does the same thing, except that they spend billions of dollars selling death sticks to you. So be Ad SMART.

Consumer or consumed?

Are you a consumer or just consumed? Did you know that another word for consumed is ADDICTED? Kids make great consumers while Big Tobacco makes a killing. Why?

Where do you get the things you want or need?

$Your parents...
$$Allowance, babysitting, or other jobs...
$$$And in the next 10 years, you’ll be making and spending your own money!

Slick Tricks: Power, Lies, Beauty, Fun, CelebrityBig Tobacco knows that if you get hooked on their product now, then there’s a good chance that you’ll still smoke when you’re older.

Tobacco companies design ads that show smoking is a good thing. People in the ads look thin, are cool, and feel strong. Now it’s your turn. Using StartSMART’s slick tricks shown here on the right, kids are telling the real truth about tobacco messages.

The next time you see a cigarette ad, don’t believe that most kids smoke. Take the ad apart. Ask yourself who the message is for and what slick tricks the tobacco industry uses to get you to smoke.
